Five signs your club or academy needs a sports consultant

25 September 2026

Not every club needs a consultant, and a good one will tell you so. But there are clear signs that an organisation has outgrown running on effort and goodwill alone, and would benefit from outside strategic help. Here are five of the most common.

1. You have plateaued

Things are ticking along, but the club has stopped moving forward. Results, numbers or income have flattened, and nothing you try seems to shift them. A plateau is rarely about effort — it is usually a sign that the current structure or strategy has taken you as far as it can, and something more fundamental needs to change.

2. One or two people are doing everything

If the whole club depends on a couple of stretched volunteers or staff covering coaching, admin, recruitment and the business side, you have a capacity problem — and a fragility problem. The strategic work gets squeezed out, and if one person steps back, things fall over. An outside perspective can help you build a structure that does not rely on heroics.

3. There is no clear plan

Ask three people at your club where it will be in three years and you get three different answers. That is normal, and it is a warning sign. Without a shared, written plan, decisions get made in isolation, resources get spread thinly, and everyone pulls in slightly different directions. A consultant's first job is often simply to get that plan out of people's heads and onto paper.

4. Big decisions are made on instinct

Restructuring the academy, changing the pathway, taking on a sponsor, investing in facilities — these are decisions that shape the club for years. If they are being made on gut feel because there is no time to think them through properly, the risk is high. Consultancy brings a structured way to weigh options and make those calls with more confidence.

5. You know something is wrong but cannot name it

Sometimes the clearest sign is a feeling: that the club is capable of more, that something is holding it back, but you are too close to see what. An honest outside review is designed for exactly this — to look at the whole setup without the history and say plainly where the real issues are.

What changes when you get help

None of these signs mean a club is failing. They usually mean it has ambition that has outrun its structure. Bringing in help does not take control away from you — it gives you a clearer plan, a stronger structure and more confident decisions, so the people already there can do more with what they have.

If two or three of these signs feel familiar, it is probably worth a conversation. The earlier you address them, the easier they are to fix.
